Part of The Pack

Colin Barker’s large-scale solo photographic exhibition originally
displayed within the unique setting of Lord and Lady Egremont’s
family stables at Petworth House, as a behind-the-scenes study
of the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt forms the basis
of this book : "It’s a collection of over 60 black and white images,
which creates a link between the undulating, picturesque
landscape of the South Downs and the gritty reality of day-to-day
life for the huntsman at the kennels.
From the very first moment I was introduced to the CL&C hounds,
I felt their strong bond and was overwhelmed by being amongst
the pack – an emotion which is apparent in these images. Thus the
title came about too: ‘Part of the Pack’. Initially, with a limited
knowledge of the workings of the Hunt, it was a steep learning
curve for me: the Hunt’s unique vocabulary, dress codes and
etiquette is steeped in history and tradition.
Whilst earning the huntsman’s trust and striking up a camaraderie
with him, I also felt encouraged by the Hunt’s positive response to
my own pursuit which has introduced me to a wealth of individuals
and an extraordinary world that I might never otherwise have been
part of."
Quote from Robin Muir MFH :
“Admittedly as an MFH I am largely biased, but as the former
picture editor of both Vogue and the Sunday Telegraph Magazine,
I can cold-bloodedly state, without partiality, that the pictures
are stunning – far and above the usual snapshot of hunting life."
